| What
type of Pedal Steel do you play ? |
| I play this
- a Sierra
Session U12. |
| Any
other guitars ? |
| A few - though I don't play then much since I got the
PSG bug. You can see them here . |
| Who's
your favourite player ? |
| Probably the late Tom Morrell, latterly of Timewarp
Tophands
fame. I
just like the kind of things they do. He mainly played lapsteel of
course. |
| Why
do you bother writing Tabs ? |
| What I like to do is to work out an arrangement of a
tune I
like. Once I've done that, I write up the Tab for my own benefit so
that I can remember it later on without having to start from scratch.
Since I get some free Web space from my ISP, I then publish the Tab for
anyone who might be interested. |
| Do
you think Tab is a good way to learn to play ? |
| No. But not everyone has the time or
inclination to
study scales, theory etc. One good thing about Tab is that it gets you
going, rather than just staring at the machine thinking 'how will I
ever get a sound out of that ?'. |
| What
do the symbols in the Tab mean ? |
| The changes used in the Tabs (copedant) are explained here
|
| Why
doesn't the Tab show bar lines, timing, notes etc |
| If you listen to the clips, that will give you the
timing and
the notes, and then the tab will give you all you're missing - the
grips and pulls. The Tab is really rough - I know that - but its enough
to serve as an aide-memoire, which is all I mean it to be. |
| Can
you Tab a tune for me ? |
| Maybe. The best I can promise is that if I like the
tune I
will add it to my list and maybe get round to it eventually. If you're
lucky, it might hit the spot and jump the queue. The one rule I have is
that I won't tab something for which I already have someone else's Tab,
so as to avoid the risk of accidental plagiarism. |
| What's
your recording setup ? |
| I use a volume pedal (Hilton Low Profile) sometimes but
no
other effects - its just my Sierra straight into my old Peavy Session
400
amp with a microphone stuck in front of it. |
| Where
do you get the backing tracks from that you use on the clips ?
|
| The backing track is either generated from
Band-In-A-Box or
by editing a MIDI file I've found on the Internet, as indicated in the
notes. |
| Why
are some of the C6th Tabs written a semitone down from the clip ?
|
| This is because I play B6, not C6 and usually forget to
transpose when I write up the Tab. |
| How
do I make the clips work ? |
| The clip page downloads a Java player from odeo.com,
and this should then allow you to play the clip. Alternatively, you can
download the MP3 to your PC to play locally by clicking on the link. |
| Where
can I get more info about Steel Guitars ? |
| At the Steel Guitar Forum . |
